The Inyo County Board of Supervisors is seeking candidates for the positions of District Attorney and Treasurer-Tax Collector. These roles will become vacant on December 31 due to the retirements of Tom Hardy and Alisha McMurtrie. The board aims to appoint successors who will serve until the next elections in 2028 and 2026, respectively.

To fill these positions, the board is inviting letters of interest from qualified individuals. Public interviews with finalists are planned for January 14 and January 15, followed by appointments at special public meetings.

"This is a significant opportunity to serve the community and ensure the fair and just application of the law in Inyo County, or have a direct influence on the local economy by managing investment portfolios, ensuring efficient tax collection, and helping to fund essential services like schools, roads, and public safety," stated Board Chair Matt Kingsley. "We encourage all qualified individuals to consider applying."

Interested applicants must submit their letters of interest along with resumes and relevant qualifications by December 13, 2024. Submissions can be mailed to P.O. Box 249, Independence, CA 93526; emailed to personnel@inyocounty.us; or hand-delivered to 224 N. Edwards, Independence.

Eligible candidates will be notified about participating in public interviews where they will present for five minutes before answering questions from the board. Appointments may occur immediately after interviews or at a later meeting.

Eligibility requirements include being registered voters in Inyo County at appointment time as per Government Code 24001.

The District Attorney's role involves prosecuting court cases related to public offenses while overseeing office operations including three Deputy District Attorneys among other staff. The position offers a monthly salary of $15,883 plus benefits similar to other county elected officers.

The Treasurer-Tax Collector manages investments ensuring safety and liquidity for public funds while handling over $73 million in annual revenues from various taxes. This role provides a monthly salary of $11,501 with similar benefits.

Deputies/assistants can continue performing duties during vacancies until new appointments are made. Appointees wishing to extend their terms beyond current ones must run for election in subsequent cycles.
