Inyo County is set to participate in a nationwide initiative known as Operation Green Light for Veterans, which aims to show support for military veterans. The county will illuminate its buildings in green from November 4-11, coinciding with the upcoming Veterans Day holiday. This initiative, led by the National Association of Counties (NACo), seeks to raise awareness about the challenges faced by veterans and highlight available resources at various governmental levels.

Operation Green Light is now in its third year and is spearheaded by NACo alongside the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers. It builds on efforts initiated by the New York State Association of Counties and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association back in 2021. In 2023, more than 300 counties took part, including Inyo County.

"This will be the third year that Inyo County has participated in Operation Green Light to show support for our veterans and acknowledge the challenges they face on and off the battlefield," said Inyo County Veterans Service Officer Gordon Greene. He explained that green symbolizes support, appreciation, and hope for veterans. "This is a truly heartfelt and worthy effort – and means so much to veterans to know they are valued and cared for – and I encourage residents and businesses to join us in shining a light on and for our former armed services members."

Beyond lighting public structures, residents, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to change one light bulb inside or outside their homes to a green bulb. This simple act is intended to convey appreciation for veterans' service while fostering dialogue about their needs.

"Operation Green Light is a gesture of support and appreciation for the public service of our veterans," stated Board Chairperson Matt Kingsley. "We are proud and grateful to be able to join in this amazing effort and we hope veterans across the county will see and feel the gratitude we all hold for their service and sacrifices."
