The Inyo County Board of Supervisors has approved an emergency contract to repair a culvert beneath Whitney Portal Road. This decision was made on March 11, following the discovery of the failing infrastructure last week. The culvert, estimated to be 50-60 years old, is located just above Lone Pine Campground and is not part of the section previously affected by Hurricane Hilary in 2023.

Public Works Director Mike Errante stated that Speiss Construction began work on the project on Monday, March 17. "The road has been closed just below the normal winter closure area, so impacts on motorists should be minimal," he said. The repairs are expected to be completed by April 30, aligning with when Public Works typically reopens this section of Whitney Portal Road for spring access.

During this period, detours will be available via Movie and Hogback roads, ensuring access to the large dirt parking lot at the usual winter closure point.
